Diabetics at TGI Friday

If you're a diabetic, then you must be extra careful while dining at TGI Friday. Try the salad menu at TGI Friday to keep your sugar and sodium intake in check. Soups are great to keep you full and satisfied without munching on the unhealthy greased meat-based dishes on TGI Friday menu.

Foods to Avoid at TGI Friday for Diabetics:

Sugar and sodium intake are crucial if you have diabetes. While the salads are the best option for you at TGI Friday, it is recommended to avoid the Pecan-Crusted Chicken Salad containing over 1000 calories and 1,650mg sodium. Also, skip Warm Pretzels with Craft Beer-Cheese dipping sauce as it contains more than 3000mg sodium. It is wise to skip the dessert for diabetics, especially the Brownie Obsession topped with Vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, and pecans.

I had a BBQ pork sandwich (which was HUGE) and fries and it was amazing! I'm from Memphis, TN (known for the best BBQ). This is better than any I've ever had in my life and I've tried them all. It's not shredded or chopped like traditional BBQ, it's more of a sliced kind like a Philly Cheese Steak texture. If you come here, prepare to wait because it's that good. If you're in a party of 2 or less, you won't have to wait as long.

How I made it a decade attending Bristol races without finding this place is BEYOND me! SO glad I did. We were literally in line with people who had driven 4 hours for the cue, and NOT the races. Completely worth the wait. This is my kind of barbecue. Tomato and vinegar based and spiced just right. Dad and I got it to go and ate down at the smokehouses. Restaurant is truly off the beaten path and you might miss the street sign if you really arent looking for the road to turn onto. Slaw and beans are absolutely declicious. Might have to get adventurous for our next visit in the spring. Massive portions and grabbed a jar of sauce to take home. Try it!

Hands down the best.. Worth the drive if it is one.. Size of the sandwiches and platters are more than generous.. The beans were great, fries were fresh cut and good, nothing bad at all to say, we went at an off time (230pm) and it was still 2/3 full.. Service was still quick and tasteful We will go back soon.. Without a doubt the best bbq ive ever had.. Worth the hype

My buddy and i were on our way down to Tennesee when he heard about this place on the internet and wanted to check it out. What's true is what everyone says about the baked beans. They are absolutely amazing! Sweet and flavorful cooked perfectly and served in a little cup (Which is my only gripe, not enough). The rest of the meal was ok - traditional BBQ of Pulled Pork and Beef Brisket, the flavors were good and smokey, but the Beef was a bit dry, the pork in my opinion had too much sauce, but to each their own. The last thing was the coleslaw - it was good and had a home made texture and flavor to it that was good. All in all - come for the baked beans - they definitely stole the show.

Wow wow wow wow wow wow wow ow wow wow and wow! The best smoked pork I've had, hands down. Baked beans are stellar as well.

Two weeks ago, I took a group of family and friends to Ridgewood, having last been there 30 years ago. I relied on that experience, Yelp's reviews, and the recommendations of a local vendor. We had a bad experience. The BBQ was sub-par. The quantity was large, but it didn't compensate for inferior quality.

My whole life I've heard about the wonder that is Ridgewood. It became an almost mythical place. I always wanted to try it but just never got around to it until a couple years ago when I lived a couple miles down the road from it. Ridgewood is actually easy to find. You can get to it through Elizabethton or Bluff City. The little two lane road it sits on used to be a main road. Parking is horrible....there's just no room. The service is interesting. The attitude that exists there is one of indifference. Kinda like "Oh we know we're the best so we aren't all that concerned in what you think or trying too hard. Its not rude, its just indifferent. The food is really overpriced. You pay over six dollars for a BBQ sandwich with no sides. It is a decent sized sandwich and it comes with slaw. Its not worth the hype. I was so disappointed. The best part of my meal was the bleu cheese dip and it should have been the BBQ. Way over rated and over priced.

I have a friend in North Carolina that has been pestering me about going to Ridge-wood for BBQ. So glad he did. Awesome food in a quaint little place with super Southern service. You have any complaints about this BBQ, time to go back North. Gotta be a Yankee!

Hurr Hurr let's make cold cuts and put them on a grill and call it barbecue. Hurr Hurr Hurr Hurr Hurr this place sucks. Also the old bag at the front door was really rude. I hope a boulder falls on this place and smashes it.

Ridgewood is one of my favorite BBQ spots in the country. I can't come to Bristol and not come in here for the BBQ pork sandwich (WITH slaw) and an order of their famous beans. It's just not possible. The pork sandwich is huge - I usually can't finish it. Delicious sliced pork topped with their own BBQ sauce (just right of course) and their slaw (which is slightly sweet and has pickles in it). This is the only place in the country that I eat slaw on my pork sandwich. At first I resisted it even here, but it compliments it so perfectly that I gave in and went for it. No regrets! The baked beans are a MUST. Best baked beans I've ever had. We can usually share an order of fries between 2-3 of us.. easy. It might be hard to find (turn at the cow field with the littttlleee Ridgewood sign on the corner), it might be hard to park (seriously my friend parked on the side of the mountain last time we were there I think), and there might be a wait, but trust me... its all worth it..

I've been a Ridgewood fan for almost 40 years. I think it is the best in east Tennessee - but there are a few places in Memphis that I like better. The BBQ pork is lean and sliced thin and grilled on the flat top. It is good, but I don't think they use shoulder or a rub. Slaw is good. The fresh cut fries are wonderful - as they have always been. I do not like baked beans, except for those at Ridgewood; however, I think they are cutting back on the meat in the beans and there seems to be more water in the beans - which makes the flavor less robust. The sauce is good - and I bought some to take home.

After spending over five years in Memphis where I regularly ate some of the best BBQ in the country, I feel that I have developed a taste for great BBQ. Originally hailing from the TRI region, I had never eaten at Ridgewood prior to today. The locals speak very highly of this place, so I had to give it a try. The service was excellent all around and my meal arrived almost immediately. Although tasty, the BBQ sauce was a bit on the sweet side for my taste, and the pork lacked the nuanced, smoky flavor that I grew to love in MEM. The worst part of the meal was the "hand cut fries" which were bland with nearly no flavor at all. You cannot order ribs here, as they are absent from the menu. That alone takes away one star. I would argue that you can't have a "world class" BBQ establishment without a 'full rack of ribs' as an option on the menu. Ridgewood does have a charming location in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, but I would rate it as an average BBQ establishment. No more. No less.

It's been a few years since I've been there and I do plan on going back! Ridgewood BBQ really is like no other as some has described. Fresh Ham smoked just right, sliced kind of thin and served with a sweet thin molasses like sauce, now doesn't that tell you that there BBQ is not your ordinarily BBQ, believe me its good in its own way. Yes them BBQ Baked Beans are some of the best I ever had, the fresh cut fries are a little on the greasy side but they wash down just fine with there refreshing sweet tea. I'm heading southbound soon!

  • Andrew B.

This place ranks pretty high in my BBQ experiences. The sides were great: fresh slaw, fresh cut fries, and the baked beans with the best smoked flavor. My family went with the sandwiches. I ordered the beef, because the other three in my party ordered the pork. I kind of wish I went with the pork, too. The beef was good and quite delicious, but the pork was amazing. They're usually packed, so you should expect a bit of a wait to get a seat.

  • Justin S.

The best BBQ and beans on planet earth. I want Ridgewood to cater my wedding, my funeral, and every significant life event that occurs in between. I'm hungry.

    (5)
  • Cody F.

Ok, the sides are really good and the locals are proud of the fact that they will just close at closing time regardless of how many people are in line. The bbq is good, not great and it's really all about the meat for me so...3 stars.

  • Otis P.

Mediocre at best bbq, long wait, over priced, way over hyped. Never go again. I do not recommend.

  • Brian W.

Haven't been to Ridgewood in a couple years but anytime I'm in Johnson City or Asheville I'm making it a trip. Worth every mile driven, penny spent, minute waiting outside and worth parking half a mile down the road.

  • David B.

As a North Carolina native, I don't normally appreciate thick sweet sauce on my barbecue. Ridgewood uses just the right amount, though, and it is a fantastic sauce. In fact, that sauce is so intriguing that I'm tempted to try to clone it at home, just to figure out why it's so tasty. I loved the pork, my wife preferred the beef. We agreed that both were excellent. Whichever you prefer at home is probably what you'll prefer here. The rumors of the excellent beans are not exaggerated. Certainly the best that I've had in any establishment of fine dining.

Oh my gawd oh my gawd oh my gawd oh my gawd!!!!!!!! I am stingy with my 5 stars for a reason. I save them for places like this. Mom and pop places ARE IT! and this is the real freaking deal. Ridgewood is located on a twisty turny road that used to be the main road between Elizabethton and Johnson City prior to the building of the main highway. Now it's considered out of the way and remote and still attracts diners like moths to a flame. Ridgewood EXUDES authenticity and an absolute lack of pretense. The decor is umm........ timeless. The career waitresses are the real deal. The food is SPECTACULAR. I almost had a indecent reaction to the food at the table. It was a private moment. Unabashedly one of the top 5 dining experiences of my life. Not perfect, but damn close. Where do I start? Let's start at the smoke house... when you roll up to Ridgewood the first that you notice is the intense smell of smoking meat. Aaaaaaah yes! Get's the juices going. I ordered the BBQ pork platter and the pork tastes EXACTLY like it smells. Smokey and DELISH. Topped with FRABulous homemade BBQ sauce (which we bought a quart to take home and several pints for friends). The sauce is of the sweet variety, with a little kick. Perfect for my palate! The platter also came with a heaping pile of homemade fries with skins which are obviously fresh. They're huge, cooked completely through and a little on the soft side (not super crunchy) which is just how I like them. Also got a pot of beans. OMG. Best beans EVER! Could have easily just had a vat of them for dinner. Really sensational beans. Did I mention how good they were? really. wow. wow wow wow. We also ordered an (unnecessary) appetizer of homemade blue cheese dip with crackers and veggies. Also sensational. Just a little kick to it, not too cheesey. My kids who hate cheese loved it, adults did too. We were stuffed and took most of it home to snack on later. My only complaint about the whole experience is the way they handle their meat. My preference is smoked pulled pork, then slathered with BBQ sauce. Ridgewood shaves it (like lunchmeat) then reheats it on a grill just prior to serving. The result is that it is just a teensy bit dried out, especially when you take home the leftovers from your humongous portion and reheat it. But the super duper FRABULOUS BBQ sauce takes care of the tiny bit of dryness. But cause I'm stingy when it comes to doling out 5 stars to restaurants, the shaved rather than pulled pork cost them a SLIVER of a star. So we'll say it was a 4 and 3/4 star culinary experience. Recommended without reservation. Be aware that if you are in the area for a NASCAR event at Bristol, you WILL NOT be able to get a seat at this place, so plan for take out. The best way to avoid waits is to go in-between meal times. Ridgewood is small and EXTREMELY busy all the time (with good reason.) Woooooooooow!

After hearing all the rave and the absurd goofy orgasm faces people make when they hear "Ridgewood" I had to try this place...can't say I was NOT the slightest bit impressed! AT ALL!! The greasy menu and tables were "rustic" I guess you could say? I'd consider it Sullivan counties version of Daisy Dukes, the ultra classy place in Greene county (sarcasm). But It was ok, that's if you're starving to death! Each to their own, but I'm use to the kind of bbq you don't wanna hide the taste of ( or add much needed flavor too ) with sauce! That kind of melt In your mouth south GA, Florida BBQ...that's sorta what I was expecting. This was different, the meat was shaved almost paper thin and did not have much smoke flavor, if any, and they also fry the meat after it's smoked..which added a few crispy spots...bizarre, not bad, just different...the fries however should have been cooked longer...I do not like soggy, limp, raw potato texture in a French fry. My waitress was NOT the nicest person either. If a friend of mine asked me to eat here I would persuade them, actually, I would straight up refuse to go again.

  • Michael A.

Where do I start... This place is one of my top 5 places to eat. I think about this place and I get hungry. The BBQ and BBQ sauce are amazing! The blue cheese dip and crackers are crack! I could drink this stuff.. Several of my co-workers have gone here with me and didn't really care for blue cheese, but they liked Ridgewood's blue cheese. I have to bring BBQ back home to share. I live in NC, and let me just say, I can't eat NC BBQ anymore because of this place. I have ate lunch and dinner before in 1 day. It is that good!

  • Sarah H.

I've been going here since I was a little girl, and this is by far my favorite BBQ place. It is truly a dive. It's a little hole in the wall on the side of a mountain, where if you're a regular, everyone knows your name. Ridgewood is almost always packed, so get there when they first open. Their pork beans, blue cheese dip starter and large BBQ sandwiches are "last meal" worthy. If you're a big fan of Memphis or Carolina BBQ, you probably won't like this place. But, if you like East Tennessee BBQ, it is well worth going out of your way for!

We were vsiting in Johnson City when we were invited to have lunch with a friend . He suggested Ridgewood Bar B Q. We have never eaten at the palce. The sandwiches were hugh. I don't recall ever having a bar b q sandwich with that much meat on it. It was the most delicious bar b q sanbwich we had ever eaten. Our friend made an excellant choice that impressed us. We give this place five stars. If you paln to try to eat there at lunch tiem, be prepared for a wait. If you plan take out, our recommendation is to order before you go. You will more than likley have a little wait. You will not be disappointed. This place is a few miles from Johnson City and you might have to ask directions as it is off the main highway.

An experience that you must try out. It's in the middle of nowhere, with a very good and distinctly flavored BAR-B-Q. I have to agree with everyone that has previously reviewed this place because the baked beans are delicious. Next time I go I will get a pork sandwich, last time I got the pork plate. It smells really good in here and you will want one of everything. Portions are large so order wisely. FYI they do have their own sauce that you can buy there.

This place was Awesome!! As I sat in the booth, I can see them making everything fresh, and the blue cheese dressing w/ saltine crackers are the best I've tasted!! If your ever in Elizabethton, TN; I would go out of my way to eat there for lunch or dinner.

Whats "Not" good here? Everything is awesome ! From the BBq pork,to the long-cut fries,to the baked beans. This place is a historical landmark of barbecue. You HAVE to go.... Now!

Absolutely the best BBQ I have ever had! It doesn't look like much and is hidden in a small town on the side of a mountain but it is an amazing find. Here's my meal of choice: Pork BBQ Sandwich with slaw Beans One order of fries easily feeds 3-4 people Blue Cheese Dip as the appetizer So good! It brings Kansas City to its knees.

I don't often review barbecue places because it is such a highly personal issue. By my standards, this place was just okay. I got a pork sandwich and baked beans and it was good but everything was just so so so sweet. The meat had a nice smokey flavor, but was dry without the sauce, and all I could taste of the sauce was sugar. The addition of the slaw mellowed the sugar a little, but I don't really like slaw. The baked beans were even sweeter. Plus, I just do not understand why one would order a bowl of blue cheese dressing for $4.25 but I'll just assume I'm missing something. The iced tea was good, the service was friendly, the place was clean, but the food didn't blow me away.

    (3)
  • Andrew G.

Definately the best BBQ I have ever had. Smoky and sweet, it's not vineger based and as stated already the beans are awesome. I travel a lot and I still haven't found any BBQ better then Ridgewood.

Just read the other 5 star reviews. They say it all. I still eat here every time I go home for leave. If you are within 100 miles of this place, you owe it to yourself to make it here, and order everything you can.

Aye here a lot growing up in JC, was never all that impressed with the food it's good but not outstanding. The biggest complaint I have is the restaurant is a Dump!! For God sake it's a trailer converted to a restaurant, with the $$$ they bring in they can finally afford a building. I'll be at Pardner's until then!!

Thank-You again YELP - Stopped in on way to Bristol & had some mighty fine Pork BBQ Sadwiches, waaaaay filling right amount of smoky ours were more of a fine chopped than pulled - Delish. I could only eat half & saving the rest for tomorrow. Do NOT MISS the Baked Beans !! I usually think BBQbeans are all too often thick & sickly sweet but these were Tasty & GREAT. Slaw good too a bit different than my Granny's but good none the less. Service prompt and friendly & glad we hit at around 2 on a Thurs so it wasn't crowded at all. Peak times & weekends it must be cranking. Plan ahead parties of 5 or more must all be there to be seated. Enjoy

  • Andy J.

This place is great! Traditional East Tennessee bbq the way it ought to be. Pork sandwich is delicious and smoky and reasonably priced. Fries are good but not great. I love their beans. They come in a cute little crock with bbq sauce. The hours are shorter on the weekend. They are closed from 2:30-4 so plan accordingly. It's always packed. Our party of 8 only had to wait about fifteen minutes for a table.

Nestled into the Tennessee hillside, on a winding road, lies Ridgewood Barbecue. Super popular, with limited parking, and cars lining the road leading up to it, I knew I was going to be getting some good BBQ. I arrived just before 2 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon, and the place was packed. It's decently-sized, too, but every table was full and there were tons of people waiting. So I placed a to-go order, and waited maybe about 15 minutes. I recommend speaking loudly, because I ordered a platter, but, to my dismay, only got a sandwich, which means no fries. That's OK, though I was a bit sad. I also got the baked beans. The sandwich has thinly shaved pork with tons of sauce. I'm accustomed to pulled pork, but this was great, and huge. I've heard the sauce here described as sweet, but I didn't think so. The beans were smoky and flavorful. Staff here is so nice and friendly. And I had a million questions, and everyone was helpful. If you have some time on your next nearby road trip, I recommend stopping by Ridgewood.

I'm visiting from out of town and was told this is some of the best BBQ in eastern Tennessee. I told the waitress I wanted to try whatever she recommended and she brought me a pork sandwich with slaw and baked beans. The sandwich was huge, messy, and just right. The beans came in a miniature crock and were excellent. We also ordered a "blue cheese bowl," which seemed like blue cheese and mayo. Basically a homemade dressing with saltine crackers. I enjoyed a few bites, but probably wouldn't get that again. Give this place a try, really great food!

  • Becca B.

My family loves this BBQ. Best BBQ around! I know it sound gross but you HAVE to get the blue cheese bowl, dip your fries it, awe heaven on earth! Only complaint I have is cost, we can't eat there often but it's a treat when we do!

Had the barbeque beef sandwich with French fries. Delicious! The beef was smokey with crispy pieces here and there. The sandwich also had a nice, sweet coleslaw and sauce. Tried the pork from my husband's plate and it was good too. The fries were cut and fried to order. Staff was so friendly and welcoming. Had an overall great time and got really stuffed. Definitely worth the two hour drive from west Knoxville.

Ridgewood is a local institution. On a regular night, this place is packed with locals, so you're lucky if you can find a parking spot to maneuver into without boxing in another car. Although all the tables are typically filled, I have yet to actually wait long for a seat. Service is fast, genial, and genuine. Their blue cheese dip is to die for. If you're not a blue cheese fan, the amazing thing about this dip is that it lacks the pungent obnoxious flavor that usually comes with blue cheese. I hate blue cheese, but this is the only blue cheese dip that I would drink by the gallon if I could. Their fries are hot and fresh, and the cole slaw is sweet and crisp. Portions are huge. We love getting their BBQ pork sandwiches. The food and service are great. The only thing that has occurred in our visits is that the locals will glance at you if it's evident that you're not from around there. Typically it's not an issue, but for some reason, there was one family at a table behind us sending us horrible, nasty glares during our last visit. We had kids with us, but they weren't being rowdy or obnoxious - in fact, one of the waitresses came by to compliment our tables (we were a large party) because our kids were so well-behaved. It took everything in me to not walk up to the other table to inquire why we were the objects of their maligned glares. Either way, the food was great, and we have always received great friendly service from the staff. You can't go wrong with anything on their menu, this is a true family establishment that is beloved by the community.

I'm going to start out by saying I've been there twice now......My first and last time! This food was just plain nasty. The meat was so dry that you have to put sauce on it to choke it down. Parking just plains sucks ( and with what you receive to eat I don't understand why). If this is what the locals consider good, I suggest the people of Tennessee raise their standards. If you want thin sliced meat just go to Arbys because at least it's sliced fresh, not sliced, held and reheated on a griddle to make sure every last bit of moisture is removed from the meat.

Made the quick detour to get in early. Standing room only on Friday night at 5:30. Carry out was best choice. Great experience friendly staff. Parking a real challenge but even the local patrons were not concerned. The friendly local deputy stopped by to help traffic and parking. Have wanted to get here for several trips nearby worth the stop and barbecue sauce on my pants

I don't get the hype. I LOVE BBQ, but this was greasy, not "bbq-y". The beans seemed awesome at first. They came out before the bbq pork sandwich and fries. They were piping hot and tasted good. But by half way through I began to notice the heavy onion flavor, which was not nice. Even remembering it makes me gag a little. The bbq pork sandwich had crunchy bits that seemed good, until the grease flavor set in. Yuck. I had to drench it in their bbq sauce and then add a little more sauce. The bbq sauce had great flavor. Oh, and the other reviews about the not-so-friendly servers is correct. Not outright rude, just unfriendly.

  • Sylvia Z.

This is some of the best barbecue I've had. Be aware that when they say their beef is thinly sliced, it is almost deli-style. But there is more than enough sauce to keep it moist. I liked the slaw on the BBQ sandwich, but you can have it without. Hand cut fries were also good, and one order can be shared by two people with smaller appetites. The best thing was the blue cheese dip with crackers. Even my in-laws who don't like blue cheese love it! The only think I didn't love was the beans, they had more onion in them than I care for. Be aware there will be a wait, and there is limited seating for waiting. But the staff is very friendly and the service is good. We will definitely be back!

I'm from indianapolis visiting family and I have to say my favorite bbq place not only in tenn. or in the south but of all time is this place. the pork sandwich with fries are amazing best ever and the baked beans are to die for. I love this place alot and wish there was something like this that comes close in indy but you know what they say they do bbq better in the south

Had their pulled pork sandwich and oooh was it amazing! It's in a nice little remote spot, with their smoker right out front so you know it's going to be good. I hear the wait takes a long time on some days; luckily we went in on a weekday post-lunch and didn't have to wait. It's cheap, delicious, and I would go back if I ever ended up in east TN again.

The wife and I ate there on April 11, 2015. I had eaten there in 2010 with my father. Both times I was there the place was busy. Parking is limited here. The barbecue is wonderful! No ribs here. Shaved smoked pork. The best barbeque beans I have ever had. The pork sandwich with slaw on the side and beans are the way to go!

Amazing BBQ and beans ! Also, get blue cheese ! I've been to BBQ places in Nashville, Memphis and the Carolinas. . Ridgewood wins hands down !

We traveled all the way from Rhode Island and found this gem using the book "Roadfood" by Jane and Michael Stern. We really enjoyed the sweet and tangy beans that were served. The portions are large, so we split a sandwich and fries. The meat is flavorful and kind of melts in your mouth. The coleslaw and fries were a great added edition. But what was even better than the food was the friendliness and service of the staff. I felt taken care of and enjoyed the experience as a whole. Thanks Ridgewood!

If you don't give Ridgewood 5 stars, you should pack up and go back to whatever bad-food state you come from. Awesome pork sandwiches, fresh-cut fries, and barbecued beans to bring your tongue to its knees. I compare all barbecue to this cause I eaten barbecue all over the states and this is my favorite.

  • Stephanie G.

This place tops the charts on atmosphere and history, but the food is simply average. Actually, "average" feels a bit generous for a place that shares a zip code with much better barbecue. It's worth trying, but you'll probably find that once is enough.

If you're looking for the hole in the wall, well this is the one on the side of the mountain. Get there early because it fills up fast and the wait can be long at times. The BBQ pork sandwich, baked beans, and blue cheese is what keeps me coming back every time I am in town. Best place for BBQ ever!!!

  • Richard C.

Firstly, i'm more of a rib fan than barbecue but the Ridgewood converted me. The undoubtedly have have one of the best brisket and pork sandwiches on the planet add the pot of beans and you are spoiled for life. One less item on the bucket list. It;s worth a side trip in you are traveling to Nashville. Memphis know its ribs but could learn tons from Ridgewood which is probably the amount of BarQ they sell in a year

Words cannot describe this wonderful place. Get over the fact that they don't have ribs or brisket. Never thought I'd like sauce on smoked ham but it is pure heaven. The meat is sliced paper thin and piled so high you can't see anyone in your party. In fact we often split a meal and it is plenty. The beans are beyond good. If you don't order anything else just have a bowl of beans. Just sweet enough and they taste like some of the ham is cooked in. Their slaw is very good and comes with crackers. Sounds weird but the locals eat it that way. The blue cheese is worth whatever they want to charge. Nothing like it anywhere on this earth or any planet. It is thick, rich and sinful. Also comes with crackers. We've eaten here about 6 times and the fries are really bad. The first time they were good but they are really tasteless and I would guess they either need to change their oil or raise the temperature. We haven't even touched ours since and concentrate on the rest of our meal. I do hope they read this as we do like good fries but not these bland ones. Expect long waits. We went at 2 thinking we were past the lunch crowd and still had a 25 minute wait and barely beat the 2:30-4:30 shutdown. At 5 expect 2-3 hour waits and the chance they will run out of food. Would have been 5 stars but the fries were so bad we couldn't. If you leave hungry I definitely don't want to see your grocery bill.

Great BBQ and a place with good character. Worth going out of your way for. (I drove over from Johnson City) Great staff too. I plan on going back soon.

I've lived in western NC and eastern TN my entire life. This is the best pork BBQ and BBQ beans I've ever had. Ridgewood is out of the way, has limited seating, and the fries are meh. Doesn't matter. The BBQ and beans are that good.

We were pleasantly surprised to find this BBQ restaurant after a day of caving and rafting in Tennessee. First, I should say that I am from NC and prefer NC style BBQ hands down. However, I enjoyed the BBQ at Ridgewood. It seems like they shaved off thin slices of pork (or beef), roasted it, and then added yummy bbq sauce. It goes well with the slaw they serve. Most patrons order the bbq sandwiches which are big. We also got an order of their very good blue cheese dip that is accompanied by a lot of packets of crackers. Good food for the area and very popular.

It's a place hidden off the road so unless you are looking, it cannot be found. The place has been around for a long time run by the same family. Just the longevity itself is worth visiting. It's described as "legendary". I tried the BBQ pork sandwich and baked beans. The beans was nice (with real pork bits in), but the pork was a little dry. Overall, it's a friendly and homemade atmosphere. Good experience.

Food was ok. Service was not. Ordered BBQ, beans, slaw & fries. The beans were delivered 40 minutes before anything else and the fries never came. There are better choices close by.

TLDR: If you are here, get the Blue Cheese Bowl, the beans, and get some hand cut fries to dip into the blue cheese goodness. Huge portions for the price. Both beef and pork are thin-sliced, with sweet bbq sauce on top. Beef is better than the pork, but overall neither are great. Full Review: This place is a little roadside restaurant in the middle of what feels very much like nowhere. We didn't have much trouble parking, but my guess is when it gets really busy, it's not good. Also, there was a good little line when we walked in but the turnover appears to be fast because we were still seated within 15 minutes. The service was very good. Our server was friendly and very courteous, almost overly deferential, which was weird. In general, though, we got our food quick and our server was good. For the food, you should not leave this place without trying the Blue Cheese Bowl, some of their hand cut fries, and their beans. These three things managed to elevate Ridgewood to a three in my book. The Blue Cheese Bowl is monumental. There is no other word for it than that. When used as a dip for the hand cut fries, it becomes a thing of pure eating passion. The baked beans also were some of the best I've had. They were not too sweet, not too tangy, just the right amount of each. Now lets talk about the barbecue. I had the beef and the wife had the pork. The beef had a great smoke flavor. The pork had very little smoke flavor. The sauce was pretty good, though, I'm not a huge fan of the sweet tomato-based sauces. I'm used to sliced brisket, and I've even had thick sliced pork shoulder, but this pork is thin sliced like the brisket. In general, I was not at all impressed with this bbq. It had been hyped so much and it just wasn't very good. They grill this stuff right before they send it out, and I think ours had sat on the grill too long. Most of ours was dry and almost crunchy, but not in a good way. It also ruined some of the flavor. Couple that with a sauce that isn't so much my favorite and a pork with no smoke flavor and I say it was not in my top ten bbq experiences at all. There is one thing I will say, though, they give you some food. We both got dinners and this was an ENORMOUS amount of food. Really freaking crazy amount of food. Just prepare yourselves for leftovers.

Some of the best BBQ I've ever ate. Got a pork sandwich ($5.99) and it was huge. As soon as I took the first bite, I could taste the smoky flavor of the Q, and the tangy and sweet sauce is so good. I love their BBQ, but this place is a little pricey. ($14.25 for a BBQ plate)

BBQ at it"s Best, award winning beans served in their own ceramic cups, Pork sandwich of my choice is piled high with delicious secret sauce, hand made slaw can be added to the sandwich if desired. The fresh cut fries are served hot on a platter. The atmosphere you want forget, can experience the food being prepared right behind the booths in front of the facility . Thanks for your service and friendlinest.

I live in the DC area and decided to take a weekend trip down to Asheville, NC. Ridgewood is on the way and had amazing reviews so I gave it a shot. You need to start with the blue cheese bowl and crackers or carrots... it's the most delicious blue cheese dressing I've ever had. More like a cottage cheese consistency with a mild blue cheese taste that isn't overpowering in the slightest. The baked beans were the BEST I've ever had. The pulled pork sandwich came highly recommended from the waitress and I was honestly disappointed. It was kind of bland and while I ordered slaw to come on top, there was hardly any. It was an ample proportion but lacked that great flavor I was expecting. I wish I could give it 3.5 stars but I'll give it 4 because they deserve the benefit of the doubt. All in all, I'd go back... I'd just order a different entree.

I did a video review some time ago. I have eaten all over the country, but this is simply the best I have ever had. I am on my way to a return trip to Tennessee from Kansas and will eat at this establishment as often as I can. You know this place is the real deal as soon as you pull up and see the grimy smokehouses. And once you step inside, you'll feel you've traveled back in time. Everything from the waitresses to the wallpaper seem like they've been there forever. Yep, the meat is smoky and tender. But the sauce is the real star here. You can buy it on the way out and it's worth every penny. The locals swear it's the best around and they know BBQ.

I would attribute the two dollar marking posted by others to the fact that the posters were Southereners used to much cheaper food. Being a Yank expatriate residing in the also expensive area of San Diego. Thus, I thought this place was a steal fo a deal. Their baked beans...... Oh My God!!!! They are the best I have EVER tasted. Their reputation has been bolstered by various southern BBQ magazines. I was told his by the owner who doubles as the courteous cashier. The pulled pork is very good. I would also reccomend trying the Blue Cheese dip: it is very smooth and creamy and not overwhelming with respect to its power as most are; though I would order it and save it fothe fries that come with your meal. I other words, don't use it on the crackers provided. The lemonade is also fabulous.

Whenever we visit my husbands family in Johnson City, TN we HAVE TO visit Ridgewood BBQ. No trip would be complete without digging into those juicy, scrumptious BBQ sandwiches and "to die for" beans. There is not a BBQ place around which can even compare to this place. It ain't fancy - but you don't need fancy when eatin' this food! Staff is friendly and helpful with menu items. Don't miss adding this place to YOUR BUCKET LIST!!

I second the below... Best Barbeque in the World. I've been through Kansas City and all it's goodness, I've tasted the brisket down in Texas. I've rendezvous'd in Memphis and lived in Tennessee, and I've frequented North Carolina dozens of times. I've tried lots of barbecue, but the Ridgewood simply has the best 'que I have ever tasted. Add to that, it's in the middle of nowhere on a highway near the mountains... the sweet tea is incredible, and the ambience is old school... it just can't be beat. Oh man, and the slaw on top of the pork sandwich... jeez it's all to die for. I even called one time because I was running late and they were closing, and I proposed they leave the barbecue on the porch and I would leave a $20 under the doormat. I made it in time, but they would have done it. The World Champion of Barbecue!

The barbecue platter is more than enough for two to split. We got a combo of pork and beef because I am not a fan of pork. My dining mates all loved the pork, besides one who thought it was too smoky. The fries were tasty, beans were fantastic, and slaw was perfect. The barbecue was just okay. It was best on bread topped with sauce and slaw since they shave it down like lunch meat. Not bad, but definitely not a place I would go out of my way to get to.

Mediocre BBQ that was dry and burnt. The wait staff had a don't care if we wait on you attitude. I have been here many times and it gets worse and worse. Can't even get a drink refill. There are many better places to go for BBQ in the tri cities area.

Yum-o! The baked beans are a must in any order. The pork is smoked and deli sliced. And, the bbq sauce... well, I couldn't understand why they don't bottle it and ship me some. It's so good.

Extremely good bbq, beans, and fries. Very smoky flavor. I met a man from NYC and when I told him I lived in Abingdon, VA (30 miles from Ridgewood, and in another state), he said, "Ah, Ridgewood!" Apparently he has family in TN and every year he visits, he goes to Ridgewood. Need I say more? :)

We went on a cross country BBQ tour in our RV last December-January and this was it!!! THE BEST DAMN BBQ IN THE COUNTRY!!! Took us a couple of hours just to find the place but it was well worth it. We were there right after they had been closed for Christmas and so the line was very long. Luckily my wife talked them into giving her the last to go order of the night. After she got a couple of sandwiches the size of your head and a pound of extra meat and beans and sauce he said, "That's it, no more to go or we won't be able to feed this huge line of people." I drove off and gave a rebel yell as we pulled out of there in our Airstream van!!! YOU WILL NOT BE LET DOWN!!!!! IT IS WORTH THE WAIT!!! GOING BACK REAL SOON!!!

This small restaurant is practically in the middle of nowhere but is well-known throughout the region. The first thing you notice when you park out front is the aroma. The meat smokers are outside and the smell is intoxicating. For me BBQ is all about pork so that's what my review is based on. Ridgewood's pork is a bit unusual because instead of the shoulder they use the ham. Regardless the taste is great and their tomato-based sauce is great (and available for purchase separately). They have some non BBQ items on the menu, but BBQ is the reason for going here. I'm not a bean fan but have heard rave reviews on the baked beans from dining companions. The other main side is French fries (you can safely skip these; they tend to be too rubbery).

  • Christian M.

Ridgewood came recommended as the best bbq in the northeast Tennessee area by locals. Although the pulled pork bbq sandwich platter was good, I was dissapointed that there were no ribs on the menu. In my eyes, bbq is primarily about the ribs. I have yet to find a great rack of ribs in an area of the country that is supposed to be renowned for bbq.

  • Ivan K.

My friends and I came here all the way from Boston because the place was recommended as the best barbecue in America in the awesome book "Eat Your Way Across the USA". And we were not disappointed. It really was the best BBQ any of us have ever had. Simply amazing.

  • Kevin T.

They can close early, and fill up quickly. The portions are huge and you will likely not leave here hungry. Some people argue about this, but I think you should only get pork at a barbeque restaurant. They have a very unique starter at this place, its a bowl of blue cheese with crackers. You should always get the barbeque sandwich with slaw on it.

This ia a "must stop" every time we pass through the Johnson City, TN area. Hands down the best barbecue I've ever had. The beans are amazing, with tiny bits of pulled pork in the sauce. Highly recommended!

  • Gary D.

The only reason I didn't give it five stars was the meat was a tiny bit dry. Maybe we just hit the wrong time of day. The beef and pork were tender and had a great smokey taste. The service was fantastic. We had an elaborate order to eat in and also to take with us. Usually when you have a big order and take out together something gets messed up or the waitress gets irritated with you. I could not have asked for a more friendly waitress. Now back to the fantastic food. The sides were some of the best I've had anywhere. The beans had a super smokey taste and the slaw reminded me of my grandmothers. If you ever visit you may want to try the blue cheese dip on the side. They serve crackers to dip into it but if you dip their fantastic fries into it they are a great combination. I read reviews on this place and decided to drive over 400 miles to give it a whirl and I was NOT disappointed. I would highly recommend this place. It is a little out of the way but thank goodness for GPS.

Excellent, and I mean amazing, meat. The sauce, the beans, and the sweet tea are overwhelmingly sweet, so get the meat with sauce on side and use the sauce judiciously. Definitely get beans and coleslaw.

The best barbecue with unbelievably good baked beans. A favorite for years- very favorably reviewed in many metropolitan newspapers and a good review in Roadfood.com

I'm not even a barbeque person, but you can't deny that Ridgewood has the best barbeque in town. The baked beans alone are awesome.

TGI Friday is a casual dining American restaurant chain founded in 1965. The term “TGI” is an acronym for Thank God It's and together the name of the restaurant is often announced as Thank God It's Friday. He invested $5000 on his own and borrowed another $5000 from his mother to buy a bar named The Good Tavern and renamed the premise to Thank God It's Friday, inspired from an expression during his time at Bucknell University.
